Touhou 神の戦場 ~ Paper Battlefield is a grid-based card game using characters, locations, items, and spells from the Touhou Project series. The game is designed primarily for two-player play, though single and four-player variants are planned.

Basic Rules

In Touhou Paper Battlefield, players are pitted against each other and must use a combination of positional strategy and raw card power to obliterate their opponent's team of girls or force them into decking out.

The game takes place over a three-by-three grid, with many cards gaining special abilities based on where they are placed. Players win matches by either attacking their opponent while they have no Life cards left (as a result of destroying their girls), or forcing them to draw cards when none remain in their deck.

Each player has a pool of cards in their Score Zone, including both their starting Life cards needed to stay alive and the Point cards required to play cards.

Players make use of four main types of cards: Girls, Domains, Charms, and Spells. As of 12/07/2024, a fifth main card type is planned but not yet in testing.

• Girls represent the Touhou series' wide cast of characters, and exist at the core of the game as offensive, defensive, and support cards. Girls can move across the field, attack the opponent's cards, and activate the Last Word effects of certain Spell cards. Be careful though, since losing these can turn a game on its head!
• Domains are locations ranging from the Hakurei Shrine to the entire Youkai mountain. These are both roadblocks to your opponent's advancement and potential supports for your Girls.
• Charms are wide-spread in applications. While some provide one-time effects to help in a pinch, others can be attached to your Girls to empower them. Don't mistake them for being weak; well-planned use of Charm cards can completely change the pace of a match!
• Spells are the driving force of offensive power in Touhou Paper Battlefield. These can be used to destroy an opponents Girls and Domains, or used on an opponent directly to force them to discard. Many Spells gain power from being played in combinations or in certain spots of the field. Many iconic spell cards from the Touhou games also have Last Word abilities, gaining devastating power when a player also controls the spell's user.

Notes

Originally, this project was written solely on a google doc. This page exists to provide an additional location and format for the rules. This page will not be updated as frequently as the google doc, but will receive updates for every major update, and will likely receive devlogs on major changes.

Within the google docs are additional document tabs for game design notes and credits for card artwork.

As of 12/07/2024, this game is still fairly early in development. Not every planned card type has been added or tested, and there aren't many cards overall. As such, any feedback or playtesting is welcome and appreciated.

Among the downloads are the following. Within a couple rule changes, the naming scheme of card batches will likely change to a more standard [release].[beta].[alpha] version system.

• A pdf of the current rules
• A folder of current batch of cards, split into normal and full-art variants of each card (regardless of which the card art was cropped for).  In addition, the card back and several sample decks are provided for use in Tabletop Simulator
• A folder of various assets for printing or usage in a virtual tabletop like TTS.

Payment

As of 12/07/2024, donations are not accepted on this product. This product is intended to be largely a labor of love, and I would not want to force people to pay money for it, even when it is eventually completed (unless I perhaps decide to look into printing physical versions of the game).

Once the final card type has been added, and all of the general rules have been ironed out, I will make donations available. If I ever were to make paid versions for physical sale, it would only be after getting the approval of the artists that have given me permission to use their artwork on the cards.
